The Issue
Freedom for Mrs. Sonia Garro-Alfonso and her husband Mr. Ramon Muñoz-Gonzalez.
They were taken, by force, from their home in Havana, Cuba by more than 50 armed police guards. They have been held in prison without charge since March 18, 2012.
They were arrested during a nationwide crackdown against the opposition in advance of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the island.
Sonia Garro and Ramon Munoz lived in a poor black neighborhood. Since very young they suffered the racism from Cuban regime. Sonia studied to be a lab technician and earned highest honors. At the graduation ceremony, the diploma was to be presented in person by the Minister of Health. Just before the ceremony, a government official told her that someone else would stand in for her because her dark skin would spoil the photo. Sonia left and have never picked up her diploma.
Sonia was a very active supporter for the Cuban Pacifist Movement Ladies in White. Her husband, Ramón Alejandro Muñoz-González is a Human Right activist in Cuba. Both claim equal rights for the Afro Cuban community.
They were expelled from their job because their political and social affiliations.
Sonia sewed clothes at home and her husband taught Afro Cuban dances. They opened an Independent Cultural Center for children and teenagers that were unsupervised in the streets. The Center was a success that began to receive support from foreign charities.
With the visit of the Pope, the Cuban regime took the opportunity to put them in jail together with many other people from the Black community and Opposition of the Government.
Sonia Garro-Alfonso and her husband Ramon Alejandro Munoz-Gonzalez are still in a Cuban jail for no reason and without a trial.
