Quite simply women should have the right to choose how and where they give birth. 'The freedom in a country can be measured by the freedom of birth' (Agnes Gereb, currently serving a jail sentence for assisting women in Hungary to give birth at home) Midwives are being persecuted in numerous European countries including Hungary, Lithuania & Czech Republic and Amnesty International Europe are yet to intervene. Please sign this petition to urge Amnesty to get involved and defend these women who are being prosecuted purely for doing their job: helping women give birth.
- Amnesty International Europe
I've just signed the following petition addressed to: Amnesty international Europe to ask that immediate action be taken to assist numerous midwives currently being persecuted in Hungary, Lithuania & Czech Republic purely because they have assisted women to give birth at home.
In the case of Hungarian midwife Agnes Gereb, home birth has now become legal in Hungary, and yet she remains in prison. The only thing these women are guilty of is doing their job: helping women to give birth. By wrongfully persecuting innocent midwives, not only are their human rights being violated, but women are being denied their right to choose where and how they give birth. Surely this should only be dictated by the mothers having babies and not the criminal court?
How can individuals doing their job providing medical assistance supporting mothers be a crime? We request your immediate involvement in assisting these women who are being failed by their country's criminal justice system.
