Dear Sir or Madam,

Few weeks ago, you have responded to my inquiry regarding your position on imprisonment of Australian publisher Mr Julian Assange. You have stated that: “Amnesty International does not currently consider Julian Assange a Prisoner of Conscience as his current detention stems from a sentence for violating his bail conditions rather than the peaceful exercise of his human rights”

As of September 22/2019 Mr Assange’s situation have changed when his sentence for violating bail conditions ended. He is now incarcerated in Belmarsh high security prison in London/England, in conditions that amount to solitary confinement, solely for his journalistic and publishing activity. He has been condemned by British justice system to remain in prison until the hearing regarding his extradition to US to face Grand Jury trial under US Espionage Act. Mr Assange is being held on behalf of United States for publishing secret documents that revealed American war crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo. These facts constitute an appalling case of Mr Assange’s human rights violation which has been  confirmed by the UN Special Rapporteur for Torture Mr. Nils Melzer (2019) and the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (2016). They also determine his status as a political prisoner.

Now, that the pretext of “bail skipping” is no longer valid, I urge you to declare Mr Assange a Prisoner of Conscience and sponsor a petition requesting his immediate and unconditional release from prison.

Respectfuly  Anna Palczynska.
