Ammend ICBC's No Fault Insurance for Adequate Compensation in Injury Cases
Ammend ICBC's No Fault Insurance for Adequate Compensation in Injury Cases
The Issue
My adult son was involved in a hit-and-run accident on April 26, 2022 in Abbotsford, BC. The driver, who left him seriously injured on the street, turned himself in three days later and received only a year's community service. Meanwhile, my son suffered life-altering injuries, requiring brain surgery, removal of his lower intestines, and a long rehabilitation journey including learning to walk, talk, and eat again.
Such cases are sadly not rare. Innocent victims are left with life-shattering changes that impact their daily lives. In particular, ICBC's no-fault insurance often inadequately compensates those that suffer from these accidents. For instance, those left with permanent brain damage lack the ability to function on a daily basis, leaving the most vulnerable of our population without the care they need and deserve. This is not in line with Canadian values of fairness and compassion.
We therefore urge the necessary authorities to reassess ICBC's no-fault insurance policy. It is imperative that compensation appropriately reflects the life-altering changes motor vehicle accident victims go through, and policies should be adapted to offer the sustainable care they require.
This is not just about my son, but stands to benefit all Canadians by setting a precedent of fairness and equitable treatment. It is time we stood up for those who can't and demand that ICBC's no fault insurance be amended to adequately compensate those harmed in motor vehicle accidents. We urge you to sign this petition and support this change for progression within our society.
