A Petition to Return Food to the Amity High School Student Body

The Issue

Recently, the administration of Amity Regional High School decided to enforce students from snacking in the school building, barring the cafeteria. This rule has not been enforced in years; even the faculty have ignored it. Why now? This rule is not only limited to food; it includes all liquids that are not water (ex. sports drinks, tea, coffee, juice). The students of Amity Regional High School contend that the recent enforcement of the "no snacking" rule is detrimental to their ability to learn and unfair as the faculty does not abide by this rule themselves. Furthermore, many teachers justify this rule by saying students can eat at home before school, however, many students do not have the time or means to accomplish this task. Statistically, teenagers are already prone to lack of sleep and high stress. Due to the rigor of AHS, many students stay up late studying or participating in extracurriculars and proceed to sleep until the last possible second in the morning in order to accumulate a barely sufficient amount of sleep (Avg: 6.5 hours, Need: 8 hours; Stanford University). Students cannot eat in the morning for the aforementioned reasons. Thus, this rule virtually disables students from eating at proper intervals throughout the day (as dictated by most, if not all, certified nutritionists). It perpetuates this generation's problem of inadequately refueling both the body and mind. The average dinner time in the US is between 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM. This means that for some students, there is a timespan of 17 hours between meals. The Amity Student Body requires snacking/drinks to promote mental and physical wellbeing and development. It is time we look beyond the blue ribbon and towards the students, who already contribute so much to the school's community and caliber.
