On Janaury 27th, Amherst Regional High School closed their school day in response to Dylan Akalis -a white, male, senior High School student- who threatened to bring a gun to school in addition to cyberbullying and racially harrasing black students. Since then, he has not been allowed to return to Amherst High School. However, four months later, the High School administration is considering allowing Dylan Akalis to participate in the graduation ceremony because he was a former Amherst High School senior. Several parents, teachers, and students of Amherst Regional High School are outraged at this possiblity because they recognize how insensitive and disrespectful this would be to the students who were bullied by Dylan. Furthermore, we recognize that witnessing Dylan Akalis participate in their school's graduation ceremony could trigger trauma for the students who he bullied. The students who he bullied have the right to feel safe in Amherst Regional High School and at any Amherst Regional High School sponsored event. As Principal Mark Jackson has stated, a student's participation in the graduation ceremonies is a privilege and can be revoked at any time due to a student's inappropriate behavior. We undoubtedly believe that Dylan Akalis' behavior qualifies as inappropriate. We would like to clarify that we are NOT requesting the removal of his diploama. We simply are asking that he be given his diploma in private and not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony or any other school sponsored event. Thank you for standing in solidarity of the students who Dylan Akalis bullied. We hope to end all cyberbullying and to prevent the gun violence that has occured in multiple schools across the nation.
