Allow free transportation to those who qualify as having a disability under the ADA
The Issue
I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 10 years old and every day since then has made my life more challenging. Because of my condition, I cannot drive as I'm not seizure-free. It has been my dream to get my license and drive where I pleased but unfortunately, epilepsy has stood in the way of that. Many people with disabilities that fall under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) also can't drive. (Examples: Epilepsy, visual impairments, heart conditions, diabetes, and more.)
I believe that free transportation should be provided for anyone that falls under the ADA. It isn't one's fault that they suffer from a disability and they shouldn't have to pay another price for it. It's free for a person to obtain a handicapped pass as they are disabled and suffering from a physical disability. So why can't people be given free transportation for something they cannot control?
I propose the government subsidies for people who fall under the ADA, to be given free transportation. Bus drivers, Uber drivers, etc who are independent contractors so they are paid through the company that owns them. I say that instead of that, the workers are contracted through the federal government instead of the company the person belongs to. The person still gets paid through the company they work for, but the federal government will pay the company. (Example: An Uber driver picks you up and is paid for the trip. Uber then pays the driver for doing their job, then, the federal government would pay the company, Uber.)
A person who is disabled would simply apply for a card that says they fall under the ADA and when they are being taken somewhere, instead of using a credit card to pay, they use the card given to them for being able to use free transportation. (Like how if you have a handicapped pass, you place it in your car) but this time the card would be scanned and charge the government for the transaction.
To conclude, free transportation should be given to all humans who are disabled and cannot drive. Eventually, the money will add up and it will be more expensive to have someone else transport you, rather than owning your own car. But, if you fall under the ADA and can't get somewhere yourself, you should be provided with free transportation. Thank you for your time and I hope you will sign the petition.
