The Issue
PET LOVERS: SEND THE AVMA THE BILL FOR MAULED ANIMALS
Sign this petition if yours or a loved one’s dog, cat, or other domestic animal has been severely injured or killed by a pit bull, Rottweiler, mastiff or other large, dangerous dog breed:
We, the undersigned, object to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)’s denial that selective breeding and genetics is the number one factor that predicts which dogs will severely injure or kill other pets each year in the United States.
We, the undersigned, demand that the AVMA reimburse each of us the thousands of dollars we have paid in veterinarian bills to repair our injured pets, and for the cost of euthanasia of our pets who could not be saved.
If the AVMA does not wish to be held responsible for our savagely mauled pets, then we tell the AVMA: STOP CLAIMING THAT BREED DOESN’T MATTER!
BACKGROUND:
An estimated 31,400 dogs attacked about 61,500 other (domesticated) animals in the U.S. in 2013, killing roughly 43,500 and seriously injuring approximately 18,100.
The animals killed included about 12,000 dogs, 8,000 cats, 6,000 hooved animals, and 17,000 other small domestic animals, primarily poultry.
The seriously injured included about 12,400 dogs, 4,000 cats, and 1,700 hooved animals. Few small mammals and poultry survived reported dog attacks.
Pit bulls were implicated in at least 95% of all attacks. Click here for more information: http://www.animals24-7.org/2014/03/22/how-many-other-animals-did-pit-bulls-kill-last-year/
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is a trade organization devoted to the interests of its member veterinarians throughout the United States.
The AVMA, which has a broad impact on public opinion and policy, has used its influence to hinder efforts to protect people and innocent pets from savage attacks and death due to dangerous breeds of dog. Click here for more information: https://www.avma.org/public/Pages/Why-Breed-Specific-Legislation-is-not-the-Answer.aspx
The AVMA -- an organization of veterinarians, who should know better – FALSELY CLAIMS THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BREEDS OF DOG, that BREEDING AND GENETICS DOES NOT AFFECT DOG BEHAVIOR, and that APPEARANCE ALONE IS THE ONLY RESULT OF SELECTIVE DOG BREEDING! Click here for more information: https://www.avma.org/public/Pages/Why-Breed-Specific-Legislation-is-not-the-Answer.aspx
The AVMA refuses to differentiate between dog “bites” – any nip or small puncture – and dog “attacks” – severe maulings that lead to death, loss of limbs or permanent disfigurement. Click here for more information: http://www.dogsbite.org/pdf/dogsbiteorg-cdc-remedies-dog-maulings-and-fatalities.pdf They cite a study of fatal dog attacks dating from 1979-1998, when there were far fewer pit bulls than there are now. Even then, pit bulls and Rottweilers were implicated in more than half the fatal attacks – more than any other breed. In spite of this, the researchers from AVMA and two animal rescue organizations concluded that factors other than breeding and genetics must be to blame for these fatal attacks. Click here for more information: https://www.avma.org/Advocacy/StateAndLocal/Documents/javma_000915_fatalattacks.pdf
Today, pit bulls are responsible for more disfiguring and fatal attacks than all other dog breeds COMBINED. Yet they comprise only an estimated 5-6 percent of the canine population in the U.S. Click here for more information: http://www.fatalpitbullattacks.com/
The AVMA’s member veterinarians stand to gain from dangerous dog breeds continuing to go unregulated and unrestricted. Every time one of our pets is hospitalized due to a savage dog attack, our money – often begged and borrowed – flies straight into the vets’ pockets. Pit bulls, Rottweilers, mastiffs and other selectively-bred fighting and guarding dogs are a cash cow for veterinary surgeons.
- AGAIN, WE SAY TO THE AVMA: PUT UP OR SHUT UP!
