The American University administration has decided to replace the traditional spring break with "Wellness Week," where classes will meet without any assignments, quizzes, exams, or required readings. This is an effort to decrease travel during the pandemic. This elimination of a school break will only harm students and faculty. The administration needs to cancel classes during the week of March 7 - 13. Multiple professors have already assigned work regardless of the policies outlined. Countless studies show the necessity of breaks for students, and now, more than ever, students and faculty are facing burnout from the pandemic and online school. The university needs to show that they care about the health and wellbeing of students and faculty by canceling classes during the week of March 7 - 13 2021. This wellness week will not discourage travel or give students a break as it claims, but it will be added onto the already stressful and overwhelming semester. Having a 16 week semester with no break is damaging to everyone involved.
