Murray, RM. Mistakes I have made in my research career. Schizophrenia Bulletin, 2017; 43 (2):253-256.
In a thoughtful reflection on the origins of schizophrenia, Sir Robin Murray concluded: “I expect to see the end of the concept of schizophrenia soon. Already the evidence that it is a discrete entity rather than just the severe end of psychosis has been fatally undermined. Furthermore, the syndrome is already beginning to break down, for example, into those cases [persons] caused by copy number variants, drug abuse, social adversity, etc. Presumably, this process will accelerate and the term schizophrenia will be confined to history, like dropsy”
Please share this petition with friends, family, colleagues, etc., in order to join in the global movement to replace the term "schizophrenia" which is scientifically imprecise as well as stigmatizing to the people who bear the burden of this inaccurate term. Medicine has a very long history of dropping imprecise and stigmatizing terms. Please become part of the international movement to resign this term to the dustbin of history as has Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
Thank you.
