American Medical Association: Support GMO Food Labeling

The Issue

Along with my husband, Andy Larson, M.D., I have been researching and writing about food and nutrition since 1998, ever since I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (multiple sclerosis). Together we have written five nutrition books and we are the founders of Clean Cuisine.

We know from personal experience and from our own ongoing research that food is powerful medicine. The foods we eat and the foods we have raised our 14-year old son on are nutrient-rich, unprocessed "whole foods." However, we are becoming increasingly concerned about the presence of GMOs in what would otherwise be classified as healthy "whole foods."

Because of my husband's position as a senior delegate to the Florida Medical Association (FMA) and because he served as the past president of the Palm Beach County Medical Society, we believe we may be in position to get the American Medical Association (AMA) to support mandatory GMO labeling, especially if we can get a large number of people to sign this petition. Just like the American Medical Association (AMA), one of the functions of the FMA is to lobby for legislation that is favorable to physicians and patients.

Ultimately, the FDA is  responsible for making the final decision regarding GMO labeling, but the AMA works alongside the FDA on a number of issues that impact the health of the American public. Getting the AMA onboard to support GMO labeling would definitely carry weight.

What's Wrong with GMOs?

I believe GMOs potentially cause harm. If you are familiar with the toxic herbicide glyphosate, which is used to support growing genetically modified (GM) crops, then you have surely read about the connection between genetically modified "Roundup Ready" crops and a growing number of health concerns. In fact, a new peer-reviewed paper published in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Toxicology (Vol. 6(4): 159–184 ) actually shows that celiac disease, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome are on the rise and that rise has taken place in direct parallel with the increased use of glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide.

Not by coincidence the company that makes Roundup herbicide, Monsanto, also makes “Roundup Ready” seeds as well; the Roundup herbicide is a chemical that can be sprayed on “Roundup Ready” plants in massive quantities without killing the plants. Typically a farmer would not be able to spray massive amounts of pesticides on their crops or the crops would die. But for Monsanto they seem to have developed a win-win scenario for themselves in that they supply the farmer with the seeds AND the pesticides. Profitable for sure. Healthy? Is the genetic modification of a plant to withstand large amounts of chemicals a good thing? I seriously doubt so.

Genetic modification also messes with natural selection and introduces novel proteins into food that have the potential to increase food allergies and stimulate autoimmune response.

But this is all beside the point.

Shouldn't we all have the right to know exactly where our food comes from?

This is Why We Are Petitioning to Get the American Medical Association to Support GMO Food Labeling!

We believe YOU can make a difference in the health of the American public for generations to come. Please show your support by signing our petition.

Thank you so much!

Ivy (& Andy Larson, M.D. too!)
