Rhiannon Kirkpatrick started this petition to American Kennel Club

Imagine an America where the shelters weren't overflowing with unwanted dogs. Where every day decisions have to be made over which ones live and which die. Many of these dogs are purebred. Some from puppy mills but many from responsible breeders who unfortunately sold them to irresponsible owners.

There are just too many dogs and not enough homes. If the American Kennel Club, the most trusted and oldest -135 years- of the dog breeding associations called a moratorium on breeding for one year, imagine how the dog population would go down. Hopefully people would turn to shelters and rescues for their companion animals and perhaps discover the joys of mixed breeds instead of insisting on purebreds.Dog lovers all agree that the treasured breeds we all know and love must be preserved but that they all deserve good lives and loving homes.

Backyard breeders and puppy mills would not be able to register their dogs during this period which, hopefully would cut down their breeding too. These people can be unscrupulous in their methods and treatment of animals but it could mean increased scrutiny on them. If other breeding associations followed suit it could be a way to finally address the dog over population in the US.
