Dear supporters,
On Friday, April 29, the National Ethics Council of the American Institute of Architects will formally consider ADPSR’s proposal to ban the design of execution chambers and spaces for human rights violations like prolonged solitary confinement. This would be a great time to share this open letter with your family, friends, and colleagues to help AIA remember how much support there is for them to take a strong stance for human rights.
We at ADPSR have presented AIA with powerful arguments in favor of human rights. We have laid out a detailed plan they can use to strengthen the architectural profession in this area. We have shared our research, and identified the holes in the counter-arguments that have ranged from potential anti-trust issues to how to interpret human rights language and beyond. We very much hope that the National Ethics Council, after a thorough deliberation, will agree with us – and with you – that defending human rights is an essential part of architects’ commitment to designing and environment that protects public health, safety, and welfare as a first principle.
There’s just one more thing to do: get even more people to sign this letter so that AIA has even more support and hears us even better. AIA is discussing this on Friday – please SHARE THIS LETTER TODAY.
Thank you,
Raphael Sperry, Architect
President, Architects / Designers / Planners for Social Responsibility
