Everyone has been affected by the emotional and economical impacts of COVID-19. Financial hardships have been apparent all across the country and students have found themselves in a position where they can no longer afford their student rent anymore.

Since Drexel University is online for the remainder of the spring quarter and possibly for summer, many of us don't need our campus housing anymore due to that factor. Drexel University has already sent out multiple emails about confirmed cases of COVID-19 on campus and has not taken any action against ACC on the behalf of upperclassmen who utilize ACC's affiliated housing. It's also important to consider how this rent money could help contribute to our parent's bills since I know many of our parents are not working right now.

I, as many other students are tied to leases for American Campus Communities (ACC) apartments at The Summit, Chestnut Square, and University Crossings. So far, all the company has done to amend things is waive late fees and ONLY offer rent abatement for sophomores (where they don't have to pay for April and half of June) which is unfair for upperclassmen.

In my specific situation, I'm in quarantine back in my hometown and have no plans whatsoever into moving in the building with my lease starting in April because I subleased before the pandemic. The building has shown no empathy whatsoever in my case and insisted that I must pay the rent since I signed a binding contract.

I've already filed a Call for Action with 6ABC news and hope to hear back from them soon. Otherwise, I'm writing this petition to inform everyone how American Campus is unfairly treating their students in the midst of COVID-19.

SOLUTION:

Students should be offered the option to:

- Terminate their lease since many students will not be returning to campus for the remainder of their contract. States across the country including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York have stay-at-home orders and students should not be transporting back and forth due to the risk of contracting COVID-19.

- Consider the rent uncollectible but not for future collection. ACC will send unpaid rent automatically to collections where it's deemed as an unpaid debt. Due to the economic crisis because of this pandemic, many students and their parents cannot pay for the rent and thus, ACC should not collect the rent because of this factor.

- A rent freeze, or at the very least, grant upperclassmen the same rent abatement option that American Campus has done for Drexel sophomores. Many Drexel upperclassmen use ACC for "off-campus housing" and the rent abatement option should also be offered for those students as well.

It's also important to contact these buildings and send in your complaints since that can make a difference! Emails and phone numbers are provided below:
