Require veterinarians to be specialized before being allowed to do non-routine procedures.

The Issue

My dog Cashew was killed because inexperienced veterinarian performed a surgery without warning me about any of the risks. I’m still not sure what his motivation was, but I know it wasn’t to help Cashew. If he cared he would’ve referred us to a specialist, who could read ultrasound properly.

The vet was aware of my dog history and initially I thought my dog had obstruction from foreign object. This vet misdiagnosed Cashew with pancreatitis first and when he didn’t get better, suggested an exploratory surgery. Post surgery he told me that there was some scar tissue (he has never seen anything like that before) and that he removed most of my dog’s intestines. I never received a phone call where he would ask me what to do or if it is okay to proceed. I was in shock, but still hoped my dog will be ok. I went to see him everyday and my dog was shaking, refusing to eat and didn’t get better. On a fourth’s day Cashew was vomiting uncontrollably. I had to be the one to insist that something was wrong. I took him to different clinic where specialists told me Cashew had a large hole in his intestines after the surgery and is septic. My dog was in excruciating pain these four days. The vet took on the surgery he was not qualified to perform and showed complete lack of care and negligence post surgery (he didn’t even know if my dog had a fever). If I didn’t take my dog out the facility, he would have died there locked in a cage. At least I got to say goodbye. My trust was betrayed, because of this vet I will never trust a doctor again. I brought him to the veterinary facility so they can make Cashew feel better, instead the vet inflicted more pain that was imaginable. The visible stitches looked awful as well. I can’t imagine he did a better job inside. The vet admitted himself that it was the hardest surgery he’s ever performed and that he sweated bullets. I believe surgery is not the time for sweating bullets. He was operating on a living being. The time for practice has passed. Still my dog was subject to his cruel experiment.
