Keep an American Airlines 777-223ER in silver livery as a retro jet.

Keep an American Airlines 777-223ER in silver livery as a retro jet.
The Issue
On January 17, 2013, American Airlines revealed a new livery for the iconic airline. The new livery replaced the classic unpainted metal finish from 1968 with a silver mica paint. The 777 has been the flagship of American Airlines for over a decade, bringing the proud colors across the globe, from Delhi to Dublin. While the new American moves forward, merging with US Airways, the past remains the most important teacher. A 'silverbird' 777-223ER retro jet will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices and struggles that brought American to its position today. This retro jet would not be without precedent. American has previously repainted a 757-223 in retro orange colors, and currently maintains a 737-823 in retro paint. US Airways has a small fleet of retro aircraft, with liveries ranging from Pacific Southwest Airlines to Allegheny.
It is for this reason that the new American should be proud to fly a 777 silverbird as part of its fleet. To quote CEO Tom Horton, "We continue our journey forward with pride in what we make possible representing the best in the nation, and proud to bear the name American."
