Mental health hospitals are flawed. Do we really think locking someone in a room where they have nothing to do but think will help them with their suicidal ideation? Does it make sense intake being sitting in a room for 3 hours while you wait for staff to do their job and get you to where you need to be? When you’re inpatient you feel like you have no purpose there but to wait. You can not leave “voluntarily” when they say you can. A psychiatrist will come and say “you’re not ready yet” “that’s not a good idea” “we will talk about it tomorrow. Weekends don’t count as inpatient days when YOU ARE IN THE HOSPITAL. Do we think an environment of constant bright lights (even in the middle of the night)  and yelling will make us feel safe? So what else can we do? Make places where there are safe rooms where you can wait for a counselor to come to you, and you can leave at anytime. The type of hospitals we have are for BIG emergencies and BIG issues. We need somewhere in the middle ground where we do need help but not in extreme danger at the moment.
