Amend the Phone Ban Rule in Skiatook, OK Schools

Amend the Phone Ban Rule in Skiatook, OK Schools
The Issue
In Skiatook, Oklahoma, the current school policy enforces a strict ban on student phone usage during school hours. For many, this rule creates significant hardship. Students like myself often find it necessary to contact our parents for various reasons—be it urgent school matters, unforeseen schedule changes, or simply the need for emotional support throughout the day.
Despite the school's provision for communication via the office landline, this solution is far from adequate. The office can sometimes be congested with requests, and it lacks the privacy required for personal and sensitive conversations. Furthermore, walking down to the office during school hours is not always possible due to time constraints or strict class schedules.
A blanket phone ban fails to consider the individual needs of students who rely on timely and confidential communication with their guardians. In today’s digital age, where technology plays an essential role in maintaining familial bonds and safeguarding the welfare of students, it’s imperative that we reassess these outdated policies.
According to the Pew Research Center, over 95% of teenagers in the U.S. own or have access to a smartphone. Many schools across the country have adapted by creating guidelines that allow phone usage in non-disruptive ways. These schools have reported increased student satisfaction and less resistance to overall phone policies.
I propose that our schools in Skiatook, OK adopt a more flexible and considerate approach. By implementing structured phone usage times, such as during lunch breaks or study halls, and clear guidelines preventing misuse, we can ensure that students have the ability to reach out to their parents when truly needed without causing classroom disruptions.
This petition seeks to persuade the Skiatook school board to revisit and revise the current phone policy. Our objective is to strike a balance—allowing necessary communications while still maintaining respect for the educational environment.
Please sign this petition to help us update our school's phone policy and ensure that students have the freedom to connect with their parents in a responsible and private manner. Your support could make a significant difference in the daily lives of students and their families.
