Amend the Military Recruitment Policies to Include Pre-Condition Amputees

The Issue

I am a pre-congenital amputee who has, since I can recall, aspired to follow my father’s footsteps and serve my country as a soldier. I was born into a military family and the desire to serve is ingrained in me. Current medical policies, however, namely DODI 6130.03 and Army Regulation 40-50, prevent my enlistment due to my pre-existing condition.

Throughout my life, I have gone above and beyond to demonstrate my readiness for military service. I trained tirelessly, taking Physical Fitness Tests for the Air Force and Army. On top of this, I graduated from school a year early and even ventured into Hollywood. Importantly, these experiences have shaped me, hardened me, and prepared me for the rigors and trials of military life.

There's a troubling disconnect here. Pre-condition amputees, fully capable of serving, are barred due to obsolete regulations. This is not merely about one person’s aspiration, but about the thousands of others like me who are precluded from enlisting due to pre-condition disability. We are otherwise medically fit, mentally equipped, and imbued with an unwavering patriotic spirit.

Let's challenge outdated misperceptions about what it means to be 'fit for service'. Every person should be assessed based on their ability to meet the rigorous standards of military service, not sidelined due to misunderstood conditions. The U.S. military stands for courage, endurance, and strength. Let us add inclusion to that list.

Sign this petition and let's collectively urge our policymakers to review, reform and amend these recruitment policies. Every capable citizen should be able to serve the nation.
