That's why I believe it's time to amend the federal election ballot to also include two referendum votes in every federal election called in Canada. This change will give citizens a more powerful voice and ensure that our democracy truly reflects the will of the people.

Important issues are often distorted, stalled, or ignored by political agendas. Floor crossings, corporate interests and power brokering have made a mockery of our political process. By including referendums on the federal election ballot, we can empower Canadians to have a direct say in crucial matters that affect our nation- direct democracy.

Historically, referendums have been a pivotal tool for making significant decisions in various countries worldwide. For example, in Switzerland, citizens regularly participate in referendums, allowing them to shape policies on topics ranging from healthcare to environmental regulation. This model not only enhances democratic involvement but also ensures that elected officials remain responsive to public opinion. Canada could greatly benefit from adopting a similar approach.

Furthermore, incorporating referendums would foster greater political engagement and education among Canadians. As voters become more involved in specific issues, they are likely to seek information, engage in debates, and develop a deeper understanding of their own political system.

We propose establishing a clear framework for how these referendums will be selected and conducted. Each federal election could present two issues chosen based on extensive public consultation, ensuring they address the most pressing and pertinent concerns of our time. The government must guarantee that these processes remain transparent and unbiased, allowing representation from all sections of society.
