East Gippsland has a population density of 2.31 people per square metre. Lets look at other regions: South Gippsland has 9.22 people per square metre, Macedon Ranges 29.52, Yarra Ranges Shire at 63.78, Mornington Peninsula at 235 and City of Yarra (in Melbourne) at 4687 people for every square metre.
I have heard a lot of objections (mostly to the fact that I moved from Melbourne) that my ask will turn East Gippsland into Melbourne. We are a LONG way from that.
We all know that the state government invests money where it will benefit the most people. That's not us. We don't get adequate services, health, transport because to them, we are not important.
We have an aging population with the median age of East Gippslanders being 52 years. In Melbourne, its 27. South Gippsland is younger than us at 49. What this means is that there is less importance placed by our council on jobs. Retired people don't need jobs. We will never attract a younger population if we have nothing to keep them here. Older populations unfortunately die out.
Lets also talk about income. I understand many of the community complain about people from "out of town" coming and buying up property. Locals will never be able to afford to live and buy more land in our region when the % of people earning over $3k a week in East Gippsland is 9.2%. That number is over 21% in Yarra Ranges/Yarra Valley, and 25% in City of Yarra. We will be priced out of our region if we can't compete with earnings. We need infrastructure, services and jobs to raise the earning potential of the area.
