Amend Tennessee statute on solicitation of a minor
Amend Tennessee statute on solicitation of a minor
The Issue
As a father, my utmost priority is the safety and well-being of my children, as well as the children in our community. Our current legal framework in Tennessee is insufficient when it comes to protecting minors from solicitation due to outdated wording of the state statute. Tennessee's law on the solicitation of a minor must be amended to better align with those of our surrounding states and federal standards. This is crucial in ensuring a more robust defense against predators who prey on the vulnerable.
Currently, the Tennessee statute lacks clarity and stringency, thereby creating loopholes that can be exploited. Unlike federal law and the laws of neighboring states, which make it a crime to solicit or engage in sexual conversations with anyone believed, or reasonably appearing to be, underage, Tennessee's statute falls short. This discrepancy undermines our collective efforts to safeguard children from online and offline predatory behaviors.
By adjusting the language of the statute, we can close these gaps and deter those who believe they can exploit the vagueness of our current laws. The proposed change would explicitly criminalize any attempt to engage in sexual dialogue with someone perceived as being underage, even if their actual age is later proven to be different. This would bring Tennessee into alignment with more stringent and protective measures seen in other jurisdictions.
Furthermore, amending this statute would serve as a preventive tool, discouraging potential offenders who might otherwise take advantage of the current law's lack of clarity. It would also facilitate law enforcement and judicial processes, offering clearer guidelines for prosecution and making it easier to secure convictions against predators.
For the safety of our children and to provide reassurance to parents who continuously fear for their child's safety, it is imperative to take proactive steps in fortifying our legal protections. Let us urge our policymakers to take action and make our communities safer for our children to grow up in.
Please sign this petition to call for a necessary change in Tennessee's statute on the solicitation of minors, and together, let's strive to ensure a safer environment for our future generations.
