Amend stand your ground law in Missouri

Amend stand your ground law in Missouri
The Issue
On May 12th 2025, my cousin Carrisa Parryman was tragically taken from us at just 29 years old, leaving behind her 9-year-old daughter. My cousin was in the process of transforming her life when she was cruelly and irreversibly stopped. The person responsible for her death was not held accountable, instead hiding behind Missouri's 'stand your ground' law, claiming self-defense. We need to change this now.
'"Stand your ground" laws, including Missouri's, have become a shield for those looking to justify unnecessary violence. According to a study by the Urban Institute, states with 'stand your ground' laws see a notable increase in homicide rates, particularly affecting minorities. These laws disproportionate impact and their overly broad nature allow individuals to evade justice even in situations where deadly force could have been avoided.
My cousin's story is not an isolated incident. Many families have experienced similar heartache and injustice, left with no closure or accountability. The very essence of justice demands that laws meant to protect should not serve as a cover for violence.
We urge Missouri lawmakers to re-evaluate and amend the current law to ensure that it cannot be misused to escape rightful prosecution. Clear guidelines must be established to distinguish self-defense from unwarranted aggression. Redefining the parameters of this law will help create a safer environment for everyone and ensure that nobody else has to suffer the same injustice my cousin did.
We are calling on all concerned citizens, lawmakers, and community leaders to come together and demand change. We cannot stand by while more lives are lost and more families endure this pain.
Please sign this petition to help us demand a re-examination and amendment of Missouri's 'stand your ground' law. It could save lives and restore true justice in our communities.
