Amend R-3 Residential Ordinance to Reduce Minimum Land Requirement

Amend R-3 Residential Ordinance to Reduce Minimum Land Requirement
The Issue
I am fortunate enough to call myself the owner of my dream horse, a loyal companion whose company brightens my life. However, our shared joy may soon be snuffed out due to a local ordinance stipulating that R-3 residential residents must possess no less than 10 acres of land if they wish to maintain larger pets such as horses. I, like many others, am faced with a heartbreaking dilemma: to part ways with a beloved member of my family or to relocate. The current ordinance invalidates the lifestyle of those who, by virtue of economics or personal preference, can healthily and responsibly manage a horse on less than the stipulated 10 acres.
Studies have shown that equines can thrive healthily on as little as 1 - 2 acres per horse, provided that they get adequate care and rotational grazing or supplemental feeding (University of Minnesota, 2011). Thus, the current restriction seems unnecessarily strict. I propose an amendment of the ordinance to reduce the minimum land requirement from 10 acres to 3 acres, a size that provides more than ample space while making responsible horse ownership more accessible to individuals and families across our community.
Amending this ordinance is not just about horses or their owners. It's about citizens' rights to make meaningful choices about their family, lifestyle, and property within responsible boundaries. It's about fostering an inclusive community that recognizes diversity in lifestyle choices and believes in its people's ability to responsibly care for their animals. In short, it's about promoting both compassion and freedom. The future of our community should not force any of us to make heart-wrenching choices when feasible and considerate alternatives exist.
We must come together to petition for this change, which will enrich our community, create opportunities, and protect the rights of animal lovers like myself. Please join me in signing this petition to amend the R-3 Residential Ordinance. Your signature means the world to my dream horse and me, and to all the other potential animal lovers this amendment could benefit.
