The Issue

Backyard poultry farming holds immense educational value for families, especially children, here in Plankinton. By raising chickens at home, we can provide a unique, hands-on learning experience for our kids. They can gain responsibility, empathy for animals, and a clear understanding of where our food originates. Unfortunately, the current city ordinance prohibits keeping poultry in our backyards, depriving our community of these benefits.

Critics might worry about noise or hygiene, but other cities have shown that these can be adequately managed with clear guidelines. For example, by limiting the number of birds, setting requirements for coop cleanliness, and ensuring that proper noise controls are in place, we can address these concerns effectively. Our neighboring towns have adopted similar practices and witnessed flourishing communities where families embrace small-scale backyard farming.

Allowing backyard poultry can also contribute to local sustainability efforts. Families can reduce their carbon footprint by sourcing fresh eggs from their own backyards. Moreover, this initiative aligns with a growing national movement towards self-sufficiency and sustainable living. It also encourages community bonds as neighbors exchange tips, resources, and even fresh produce.

Let us engage with the Plankinton City Council to revisit and revise this ordinance. By introducing a well-structured and balanced policy, we can support educational opportunities, foster community development, and encourage sustainable living in our town.

Please sign this petition to urge our city officials to consider the positive impacts of legalizing backyard poultry. (You must reside in Plankinton City Limits to sign.) Together, we can work towards a more informed and sustainable community. Let's make this change for Plankinton's future.
