Amend Loudoun County Zoning Laws: No More Data Centers
The Issue
Petition to End Future Data Center Development in Loudoun County
Amend Loudoun County Zoning Laws to Prohibit Additional Data Centers
We, the undersigned residents of Loudoun County, respectfully call upon the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors to amend the county's zoning ordinances to prohibit the construction of any new data centers within Loudoun County.
For years, Loudoun County has been at the center of the data center industry and has hosted significant development. Many residents believe the county has reached a saturation point and that continued expansion is no longer in the best interest of our communities, infrastructure, environment, and quality of life.
Currently, large portions of Eastern Loudoun permit data center development through discretionary approvals by the Board of Supervisors. This places the future of our neighborhoods and communities in the hands of changing elected officials rather than clear, consistent zoning protections.
Western Loudoun has long benefited from zoning regulations designed to protect its rural character and limit incompatible industrial development. Residents throughout Loudoun County deserve the same certainty and protection.
We Request That the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors:
- Amend the Loudoun County Zoning Ordinance to prohibit new data center construction countywide.
- Remove data centers as a permitted or special exception use in applicable zoning districts.
- Establish zoning protections that prevent future Boards from approving additional data center development through discretionary votes.
- Prioritize residential communities, schools, parks, transportation infrastructure, environmental resources, and quality of life over continued industrial expansion.
- Develop a long-term economic strategy that does not rely on perpetual data center growth.
Why This Matters
Loudoun County residents are increasingly concerned about:
- Industrialization of residential areas.
- Noise and visual impacts.
- Energy consumption and strain on infrastructure.
- Environmental and public health concerns.
- Traffic and construction impacts.
- Long-term effects on community character and property values.
- The cumulative impact of continued expansion on future generations.
The question is no longer where additional data centers should be built. The question is whether additional data centers should be built at all.
We believe Loudoun County has done its part. It is time to establish clear zoning protections that permanently prohibit further data center expansion and preserve the quality of life that has made Loudoun County a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family.
By signing this petition, we urge the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors to take immediate action to amend county zoning laws and prohibit any future data center development in Loudoun County.
No More Data Centers. Protect Loudoun's Future.
