Amend Laconia's motorized scooter ordinance
The Issue
My name is Claire Washburn, and I am a resident of beautiful Laconia, New Hampshire. Recently, I have come to realize how outdated City Ordinance 201-27 is. This ordinance restricts the use of motorized scooters on any sidewalk, street, or public way in our city. It’s a law that limits mobility, innovation, and opportunities for people like my grandson and many others, who rely on these efficient modes of transport for daily commuting and leisure.
In today's fast-paced world, the use of eco-friendly and compact means of transportation like motorized scooters is increasing. They are efficient, reduce our carbon footprint, and can help alleviate traffic congestion. Laconia, known for its picturesque landscapes and community-oriented living, should be at the forefront of embracing such sustainable practices rather than hindering them.
While safety should always be a priority, completely banning scooters instead of regulating them is a step backward. Many cities across the nation have successfully introduced regulations that allow the safe use of motorized scooters while ensuring pedestrian safety. By amending Ordinance 201-27, Laconia could implement similar regulations. These might include designated lanes, speed restrictions, and helmet requirements to ensure both scooter users and pedestrians are safe.
Furthermore, motorized scooters can offer a cost-effective transportation solution for residents who do not have access to a car or cannot drive due to age or disability. They can make our city more inclusive and accessible to all its citizens.
According to a 2022 survey by NACTO (National Association of City Transportation Officials), cities that embraced scooters saw a 40% reduction in city center traffic, contributing to decreased pollution and a healthier environment. This change could also help attract more tourists, promoting Laconia’s incredible outdoor spaces.
Let us move Laconia forward by supporting scooter use under safe and regulated conditions. Let's modernize our city ordinances to reflect our community's needs and aspirations.
Please join me in urging the Laconia City Council to amend Ordinance 201-27 to allow the use of motorized scooters with proper regulations. Sign this petition today and help make Laconia a leader in sustainable transportation.
