The Issue

My name is Brandi Sutherland, and I am a proud cottage baker residing in Knoxville, Tennessee. Like many others in our community, I have devoted my time and passion to crafting delicious, homemade baked goods to share with my neighbors. Despite the undeniable benefits these bakestands bring to our local community, providing accessible and tasty treats to residents, I've faced a significant roadblock. According to current Knoxville City and Knox County codes, while farm stands are perfectly legal, bakestands are unfortunately not.

This issue is not merely bureaucratic; it affects real people and businesses trying to make an honest living by doing what they love. I have been denied the use of my bakestand, a setback that impacts not only my livelihood but also the community that enjoys and depends on my goods. Across Knox County, bakestands have organically spread, showing a vibrant culture of small business and community engagement. However, legally, they remain in a grey area, leading to uncertainty and lost opportunity for many passionate local bakers like myself.

The distinction between farm stands and bakestands seems arbitrary. Both offer local, homemade products and cater to the community's needs. The current codes, however, leave countless cottage bakers like me in limbo, unable to operate openly and support their families. It is time Knoxville City and Knox County amend their zoning and business codes to embrace bakestands officially and safeguard our small, culinary ventures.

Allowing bakestands can invigorate our local economy by providing more opportunity for entrepreneurs, fostering community bonds, and offering residents more access to local culinary delights. Moreover, supporting bakestands can revive interest in home-baking traditions, bolster food security with local options, and create a unique identity for Knoxville as a hub for artisan products.

With your support, we can propel this movement forward. I urge Knoxville City and Knox County officials to revise the existing codes to recognize the value and necessity of bakestands within our community. Let us ensure that small business owners and beloved local bakers have the right to flourish and contribute to our local economy. Please join me in this fight to preserve and nurture our community’s culinary spirit. Sign this petition to show your support for amending Knoxville's zoning codes to allow bakestands to thrive legally and safely.
