The Issue

Losing a parent is one of the most devastating experiences a child can go through, and the grief is compounded when they face the unexpected financial burden of covering funeral expenses. My siblings and I recently experienced this heartache firsthand when our beloved mum passed away at just 65 years old. She was discharged from the hospital without full disclosure of her condition, and within a few days, we had to face the unimaginable reality of her loss.

Our mother had been divorced from our father for over 20 years, during which she dedicated herself entirely to raising us and pursuing a degree while working tirelessly in the caring profession, a true testament to her selfless character. Tragically, as children of a single parent, we found ourselves responsible for organizing and financing her funeral entirely on our own, with no financial support from a partner or spouse.

Currently, the legislation around funeral expenses assistance does not adequately address the needs of children who lose a parent under retirement age, particularly in cases where the parent has never remarried or cohabitated with another partner. This gap leaves many children vulnerable and overwhelmed, as they must navigate the costly and complex process of arranging a funeral without the guidance or financial support typically available when a spouse or partner is present.

We call for an amendment to the existing legislation to extend funeral expenses assistance to the children of parents who pass away under retirement age, in situations where the parent was divorced, separated, and not in a cohabitative relationship. This financial support should be directed towards the dependents who are left to bear the emotional and financial burden during such a challenging time.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for systemic change that acknowledges and supports children in their time of need. Funeral expenses should not obstruct a child's ability to grieve and celebrate their parent's life with dignity. We urge policymakers to recognize the unique challenges faced by families like mine and to take immediate action to amend the legislation. Let's ensure that no child has to endure the dual blow of grief and financial hardship following the loss of a parent. Please sign this petition to make a difference in the lives of grieving families.
