Amend Florida's Romeo and Juliet law to protect victims
The Issue
The Romeo and Juliet law in Florida is meant to protect young couples close in age from severe legal consequences when they engage in consensual activities. However, this law is often misapplied, allowing actual predators to avoid accountability for their actions. As a parent and family member of victims who reside in Florida, I have witnessed firsthand the way this law protects those it shouldn't. It is time for a change.
This issue is incredibly personal to me. My friends and other family members in Florida have suffered because their predators have used this law as a shield. These individuals, who have caused significant harm, remain free and unpunished, blatantly escaping the justice they truly deserve. It is a heart-wrenching reality to know that victims are silenced and predators walk free, purely due to the loopholes in this legislation.
Statistics have shown that child safety and well-being should always come as a priority. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children reports that every year about 58,200 children are abducted by non-family members. Many of these cases happen in states like Florida, where laws sometimes fail to prioritize the victim's safety over the technicalities protecting perpetrators. By allowing predators to evade justice under the guise of this law, we are effectively risking the safety of many more children.
The proposed solution involves tightening the criteria under the Romeo and Juliet law. This means specifying terminology, ensuring clear consent definitions, and reinforcing the distinction between consensual relationships and predatory actions. It is crucial for the Florida legislature to prioritize victim protection over outdated legal frameworks.
Changing this law will mean fewer individuals are victimized and more perpetrators are held responsible for their abusive acts. This is not just a legal intervention; it is a moral and social obligation to repair the gaps that allow injustice.
We call upon Florida lawmakers, advocacy groups for children's safety, and the broader public to unite in amending this law, ensuring that it no longer serves as a safeguard for predators but rather fulfills its intended purpose of fairness and protection in consensual scenarios.
Join us in safeguarding the future of our children and families. Sign this petition to urge Florida legislators to amend the Romeo and Juliet Law to truly protect victims rather than shield predators.
