Amend Flatwoods City Ordinance to Allow Backyard Chickens with Regulations
The Issue
Like many of you, I am a citizen of Flatwoods, Kentucky, passionate about empowering families and promoting transparency in food sourcing. Price-gouging by stores on basic necessities, such as eggs, places an undue burden on ordinary families. It is my firm belief that we should have the freedom to sustainably source our food, and in this context, to raise chickens in our backyards.
For this purpose, I propose an amendment to the current city ordinance which currently forbids keeping backyard chickens. I believe that with clear, specific regulations in place, we can maintain a balance between the concerns of the urban environment and the benefits of small-scale home poultry farming. In addition to providing a regular source of fresh, ethically sourced eggs, this practice also allows households to reduce food waste by feeding appropriate leftovers to chickens.
To stress the feasibility of this proposal, consider cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, where similar laws have been successfully implemented (CDC, 2018). Clear parameters can address potential issues like odour, noise, and disease transmission, thus fostering a blend of urban life with a touch of responsible and sustainable agrarian practices.
Your support in making this amendment a reality can pave the way for a greener, self-sufficient, and a more sustainable Flatwoods. I plan to present this proposal at the forthcoming city-county meeting. We need your support to make this vision a reality. Please, sign this petition to allow the raising of backyard chickens under specific regulations in Flatwoods, Kentucky. Together, we can reclaim our food security and make our city a frontrunner in sustainable urban living.
