This petition is deeply personal to us; five strong and capable women are desiring to run for the office of Mayor with a unique proposal - to serve as a team of co-mayors if elected. This team believes in collective power, and they have come together to serve our city more effectively. However, such collaborative governance is currently not permitted by our city charter, which allows only one individual to run for a single elective office.

Reforming the city charter is necessary to support our modern democratic framework, which acknowledges the breadth of knowledge and the diversity of ideas that a team can bring. Numerous countries across the globe, such as Switzerland and Bosnia Herzegovina, embrace collective leadership for better governance (Source: The Conversation). It's time for our city to also move towards a more progressive approach.

Amending the city charter in this regard will support the values of inclusivity, teamwork, and the shared wisdom that are critical for a thriving city in the 21st century. By allowing two or more people to run jointly for an elective office, we are not only endorsing diverse leadership but also encouraging innovation and sustainable governance.
