Amend Bylaws - An Elected Nominating Committee
The Issue
Preamble to a motion to amend the Bylaws as previously adopted.
This is a motion to reform the constitution of the Nominations Committee, so that four Non-Board of Directors members will no longer be appointed by the Vice President but elected by the LRA membership /body; and Executive Committee members will include the Vice-President (Chair) and President Elect.
Whereas, the Literacy Research Association encourages full participation in the business of the organization, and;
Whereas, transparency and governance by elected representatives is highly valued in the Literacy Research Association, and;
Whereas, the Literacy Research Association’s leadership succession practices should be aligned with related professional literacy organizations, where leadership and service are valued indicators of professional and scholarly engagement, and;
Whereas, the Nominations Committee is a critical entity in the process of identifying and expanding the leadership of the organization;
Resolved, That the Nominations Committee be composed of the Vice-President, President-Elect and four Non-Board of Director members elected by the LRA membership /body who shall meet all criteria as outlined in the PPH;
Resolved, That the slate of 8 candidates for 4 positions on the Nominations Committee shall be accepted with approval by a majority vote of the Board of Directors;
Resolved, That the first slate of candidates will be formed by Chairs of the Standing Committees who have been appointed to their roles; and thereafter, the slate of candidates will be formed by the elected and executive members of the Nominations Committee.
To move this motion forward we need to gather signatures from 10% of the paid membership of the organization. Following Board of Directors action, the full membership will then have a 30 day period to comment.
