Ever since I was a child, I've dreamed of raising my own chickens. To feel the early morning sun on my face, hear the chorus of clucking in my backyard, and collect fresh eggs to share with my family. My dream has been constantly hindered by the prohibitive restrictions on where a chicken coop can be placed in my local area - unfairly far from roads or residences. Therefore, I propose we remove these limitations and amend the restriction to allow backyard chicken coops 10 to 30 feet from roads or residences. This adjustment would permit more individuals, myself included, to enjoy the fulfilling pastime of backyard farming, while still respecting community standards for cleanliness and noise. Moreover, rearing chickens can have environmental advantages as chickens offer natural pest control and their waste can be composted for plant fertilization. According to the USDA, hobby farms like these help contribute to local food security and biological diversity (USDA, “Urban Agriculture Toolkit”, 2016). Let's work together to amend our bylaws, encourage responsible backyard farming, and bring us one step closer to a sustainable future.
