Amend ASHA Bylaws and Board of Directors Through a Two Percent Vote

Amend ASHA Bylaws and Board of Directors Through a Two Percent Vote
The Issue
As an SLP, I stand with hundreds of other SLPs who are seeking change from the association where we pay dues and receive certification. We are calling for an amendment to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) bylaws and Board of Directors through a membership vote. This requires two percent of active members representation and why we are seeking your signature on this petition. This is not just about us as professionals "griping" about a dues increase; it's about maintaining high standards in our field and ensuring that our voices are heard within the organization that "advocates" and "represents" us.
Currently, ASHA's bylaws can only be amended by two percent of the membership vote. The bylaws have not been amended in over two decades and currently does not adequately represent the diverse views within our profession. Meeting the two percent of the membership vote requirement would allow the members to amend the bylaws and provide a more democratic process. Overall allowing for greater representation of different perspectives.
Moreover, we believe that changes to the Board of Directors autonomy about the membership, fees, and salary are required. This would ensure that any significant decisions regarding leadership reflect broad consensus among members rather than simply majority rule.
We urge all members of ASHA to support this petition for change. It is time for our voices to be heard and for democratic principles to guide decision-making processes within our professional association. Please sign this petition today!
