The Issue

In memory of our beloved mother, Late Smt. Indu Devi, who dedicated her life to serving as an Extra Departmental Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS), we, her family, have faced an unexpected challenge that requires immediate attention and empathy from the highest authorities. Our family has been further plunged into hardship since her passing. My sister, Smt. Pushpa Devi, has found herself at the center of a policy gap that threatens her future wellbeing and our family's stability.

The current policy regulations for compassionate engagement of dependent daughters under GDS could lead to distressing inequality. While spouses face no upper age restrictions and differently-abled dependents benefit from an age relaxation of 10 years, dependent daughters such as my sister face unnecessary constraints without any provision for age relaxation. This is despite being fully dependent on the deceased GDS for their livelihood. This stark discrepancy in the application of compassionate policies is unfair and places undue stress on families already grieving a profound loss.

The systemic gap in the policy does not reflect the compassion and empathy we believe our government stands for. Such policies are designed to support the family of deceased employees, ensuring their welfare after a grievous loss. Therefore, it is crucial to reevaluate the present policy to address the peculiar situations like my sister's, where the policy inadvertently penalizes dependent daughters whose circumstances are no different from those benefiting from age relaxations.

Moreover, our request aligns with the principles of fairness and equity that underline governmental duty. Federal agencies have recognized similar disparities in other instances and have revised policies to better reflect inclusive governance focused on social justice with provisions for exceptions in extraordinary circumstances. It becomes imperative to extend this spirit of justice to the dependent daughters of former GDS employees.

I urge the Department of Posts and the Ministry of Communications to urgently consider an amendment to these policies, welcoming dependent daughters like my sister, irrespective of age, to benefit from the same provisions as other categories of dependents. By signing this petition, you support the request for an equitable review of compassionate employment policies, ensuring a fair chance for all dependents of late government employees.

Please sign this petition to help correct a fundamental injustice and support families like ours in navigating through their times of need.
