The Big Issue started this petition to Thérèse Coffey (Work and Pensions Secretary)

The Big Issue has been a shining a light on the national scandal of holiday hunger throughout the summer.

Now, for the next stage of our campaign, we want you to sign a petition to help prevent a significant driver of holiday hunger.

From what we've learned, it will take a significant increase in investment and a rethink of our food system to conquer the issue once and for all.

But changing the arrears system for parents on Universal Credit could lift the burden that parents face when their kids are off school and do not receive free school meals.

Over the summer holidays, childcare costs can increase by up to £800 with parents often forced to pay for that upfront. On Universal Credit parents can claim back up to 85 per cent of their childcare but this is paid in arrears at a later date, leaving a significant dent in the budget.

This discrepancy sees families pushed into the red or parents forced to give up work to take care of children instead – the opposite of what Universal Credit was supposedly intended to achieve.

We think this is a scandal. So we are asking you to support us in demanding the government change Universal Credit to stop this happening.
