The only group with parental rights and responsibilities who are not supported to spend time with their new child is the self employed father. He is currently not eligible for either statutory paternity or paternity allowance.

This is despite paying National Insurance like all the other parents who do get support.

As it stands a father and mother who are employees qualify for statutory paternity/ maternity pay. A mother who is self employed can qualify for Maternity Allowance. Employed parents can even share the full amount of time allocated to the mother if they decide to as a family.

We should be valueing the influence of a father on their child. We should be encouraging more shared responsibility in order to close the gender pay gap and supporting a family's right to choose the main care giver.

This petition is calling for equality in Paternity Allowance and the option of shared parental leave for all self employed  fathers in line with employed fathers.

"In the UK, self-employment has risen rapidly over the last two decades. The number of self-employed workers has increased from 3.3 million in 2001 to 4.8 million in 2017, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS)."

We should be supporting hardworking self employed fathers, not ignoring them.
