Don’t Send Mohammed Mirzo to Bulgaria – The Mirzo Family Belong Together in Cardiff

The Home Office is poised to tear apart a popular Syrian refugee family by deporting their young son from the family home in Cardiff to Bulgaria - a country criticised by Amnesty International for its vigilante migrant-hunting gangs and failure to protect refugees.

I first met Ali Mirzo in 2015 when he volunteered to interpret for child refugees from Syria.  He was still seeking sanctuary himself at that time, but after that he was swiftly granted refugee status and gradually reunited his family, which had been spread across Europe and the Middle East because of the war in Syria, in Cardiff.

One of Ali's sons, Mohammed, was separated from the rest of the family aged 16.  He ended up in Bulgaria, where he was left traumatised by abusive treatment from the authorities and the experience of getting lost alone in a forest without food or water.  Mohammed made it to Germany, where he was beaten up by a neo-Nazi gang.  The attackers broke his shoulder, which has still not fully healed, and since then he has suffered from depression.  He eventually made it to Cardiff in April 2017, seeing his beloved mother for the first time in two years, and meeting his newborn baby brother for the first time ever.

The Mirzo family's joy was short-lived. In October 2017 Mohammed was detained at Campsfield Immigration Removal Centre in Oxfordshire.  The Home Office had decided to remove him to Bulgaria rather than assess his refugee claim here on the basis that he travelled through Bulgarua 4 years ago. Thanks to people signing this petition, the media interest and the intervention of Mohammed’s MP, he has been released but he is still under threat of removal.

Ali Mirzo, Mohammed Mirzo's father, says:

"We just want the Home Office to see sense and process his claim here, where he is safe and supported by his family, and we are calling on the good people of Cardiff to contact the Home Secretary, Amber Rudd MP, asking her to intervene and let Mohammed stay here."
