Waleed Abu al-Khair is a human rights lawyer of the highest order and his imprisonment is antithetical to justice and all legal principles. In a transparent effort to thwart lawyers from taking on human rights cases, the government has imprisoned Waleed Abu al-Khair for 15 years.
Waleed Abu al-Khair has proved himself a thought-leader on the Saudi Arabian legal system with regard to women's rights and the rights of free speech. One of his most important cases was the representation of Raif Badawi, a writer who was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1000 lashes for publishing a blog critical of some Saudi Arabian religious leaders. Waleed Abu al-Khair bravely represented Mr. Badawi; his advocacy for and legal representation of Raif Badawi's lawful, inherent right of free speech in writing a blog constitutes the fundamental role of a lawyer: to zealously fight for their client's preemptive rights.
When lawyers represent clients in the fight for fundamental human rights, and the State's response is to imprison the attorney, the State shows itself to be in opposition to the entire jurisprudential system upon which all legitimate legal systems are based. This is not only an egregious violation of his rights as a citizen, but it is a slap in the face to all jurisprudence everywhere.
