Tell Amazon to Stop Donations to the NRA

Amazon has a program called AmazonSmile, where you can designate a charitable organization, and the world’s biggest retailer will donate a portion of your purchase to it. I was shocked to learn that the NRA Foundation is one of the charity choices. The NRA is currently blocking gun reforms that its own members are calling for. In light of recent gun violence, it’s time for Amazon to remove the NRA from its list of charities.
Gun violence is casting a dark shadow over America. The recent attack in San Bernardino was proof for me that it is far too easy for guns to fall into the wrong hands. But I get that not everyone agrees, and that, as a democracy, we have to be willing to compromise.
The problem lies in the fact that the National Rifle Association (NRA) makes it hard to even pass gun legislation that a large majority of Americans support. Everything from universal background checks to making sure people on the terrorist watchlist can’t purchase guns have been blocked by the NRA. It has become a group that stifles the democratic process through its over-the-top influence over lawmakers.
There are over 2,000 charities to choose from, and I understand why Amazon wouldn’t want to start making judgment calls. But when an organization like the NRA becomes a roadblock to reforms that could saves lives, using money, fear, and hatred to get its way, businesses like Amazon have a responsibility to say they won’t play a role in its success.
Amazon is not an elected official swayed by the NRA’s contributions. Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos has the ability to decide what charities no longer share Amazon’s values. It’s time for the NRA to be removed from the list of AmazonSmile charities.
