Replace plastic packaging of e-commerce products with eco-friendly materials

I write on behalf of the common people of India to make an appeal for use of waterproof cloth bags by online shopping giants in alignment with the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It is a request to e-commerce giants such as Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal, Healthkart, etc. to use well-stitched and sealed rainproof cloth bags (used for 5kg rice bags) instead of traditional plastic for the outer packaging of the goods delivered by your company.

The rainproof shopping bags can be re-used by people for their daily shopping. These bags may bear the company’s logo and multiple pockets to put in vegetables. This has several benefits: -

1.      No plastic waste is generated through shopping online.
2.      Shopping bags bearing the company logo can prove to be an effective and economical source of advertisement for the company.
3.      These cloth bags would replace the 40-50 plastic bags used and disposed by each household per week.

With the rise of e-commerce, it is estimated that about 358 million people will shop online by 2020. All kinds of plastic (recyclable/51 micron) ends up in the environment, making our soil infertile, water toxic and food inedible. It is high time we use sustainable measures for packaging and replace plastic with eco-friendly materials.
