Amazon, Release Sandman Act IV/V, and donate the proceeds to charities for abuse victims.
The Issue
In 2020 Amazon, through Audible, released The Sandman Act I, an audiobook based on the much beloved DC comic of the same name. It has been heralded by comic fans and audiobook fans alike as one of the audio best adaptations of all time. Many fans considered them to the Crown Jewel of The Sandman adaptations. Taking the original scripts directly from the comics and adding amazing music and vocal performances to bring them to life.
They were not only beloved critically but had heavy financial success as well, becoming the highest grossing Audible Originals of all time. There are many people out there who loved these Audiobooks and believed they added value to their lives. They first three acts were released consecutively in 2020, 2021, and 2022. The fans have been waiting patiently for the last 2 acts, covering the final arcs of the series and some important spin off material, for 2 years now. This is due to an inexplicable decision by Audible to not release Act IV and Act V when they were completed, years ago.
In 2024 and throughout 2025 the author of The Sandman comics, and narrator for the audiobooks, Neil Gaiman, has been accused of sexual abuse spanning decades. These accusations are horrible and they have evidence no one here is in denial of validity of the accusations or the seriousness of them.
These accusations have caused several companies to cut ties with Gaiman, including Amazon, which cut Good Omens season 3 into a TV movie with no involvement from Gaiman. We understand completely why these decisions are being made and that these are the consequences of Gaiman's actions.
These audiobooks enriched the lives of thousands of people, to clear financial gain from Amazon. We believe it would be a shame to not allow them to be released because of the actions of just one person who worked on them, no matter how important.
This is especially insulting to Dirk Maggs who has produced amazing audioplays based on characters like Batman and Spider-Man since the 90's and worked up his skills in order to bring us the incredible Sandman audiobooks. The amount of work and love Mr. Maggs put into each episode can not go understated and him having to deal with the consequences of Neil's actions is completely unfair.
We are pledging to buy The Sandman Act IV and V if they are released by Audible to complete the series for fans who loved the series. We are also asking you to take all proceeds and donate them to various organizations such as National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), Safe Horizon, or RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), companies that do a great job supporting Abused Women.
We are also willing to buy them directly instead of using Audible credits if this is the only way to ensure this money gets to the people who need it the most.
Additionally, if you are unable to send the money to charities and organizations in need, we still ask that you release these pieces of art for all the people whos lives they've touched. There are many people still willing to finish this journey even with the allegations. We will find our own ways to donate and support victims in this case.
We also understand if there is a need to recast Neil Gaiman as the narrator, seeing as he would be owed residuals for this release. We are also asking him to willingly remove himself from the project like he did with Good Omens Season 3 and the Good Omens Graphic Novel to make sure this piece of art can be released and not have to suffer from his actions.
It is unfair to the fans of this work, and the others who worked on this art, to see it unreleased due to the actions of one bad player. We want to support these audiobooks coming out for those who want to see them finished out and can separate the art from the artist.
Please consider our cause, we understand the seriousness of the accusations against Neil, and understand the need for consequences. However we also don't see the point in not putting out work that is already completed, especially when the money from these projects could be used to donate to places that can help with important support towards abuse victims.
Additionally, if released we will use the Gaiman and Sandman community to help find ways to donate to causes that support abuse victims. Even though we are fighting for art to be released that shouldn't be affected because of a single ,we also want to use this as an opportunity to put good into the world.
Thank you reading and hopefully you will at least consider our cause.
