In the recently released #PaatalLok a Webseries on the @Amazon Prime Video, produced by actor #AnushkaSharma, the second episode has certain scenes, particularly the Scene from Season 1, Episode 2, 3 minutes & 41 seconds, where the Nepali speaking community is maligned with the use of a slur.

The character is interestingly named as Mary Lyngdoh (a very common surname of the Khasi community from Meghalaya) and here she is called a Nepali Randi ( A Nepali Whore!). Nepali is one of the 22 scheduled language and there are 10.5 million people in India who speaks Nepali as common tongue. The Gorkha community is the largest Nepali speaking community and this is a direct insult to the community.

#NEStereotypedAgain

This is not just regressive but also racist stereotyping of North Easterners in particular the Gorkhas. During covid19 crisis we have been fighting corona racism, to add up to our woes, this web series will incite not just racial but sexual slur and rape attempts to the women our NE community. We strongly condemn it in toughest terms and seek immediate removal of the scene's subtitles and mute the slur!

It might be potraying an existing discrimination that women are facing but the problem lies in the way that such online contents are consumed in india, be it fake news or creative work there is a complete "willing suspension of disbelief" in part of viewers, therefore it the is not a far fetched apprehension when majority of the people would take those words at its face value and buy the idea that Nepali women (or anyone whom they would deem as Nepali due to racial resemblance) are whore and women folk would be subjected to discrimination, harassment, misogyny in all sphere of life. Be it a student studying in university or a maid working in a flat or a working women/student searching for a place to rent, are seen with the lens of such perceived/acquired knowledge and this slur further reinforces the same derogatory racial profiling.

We cannot consume community stereotyping and accept racist attack in the name of creative freedom. Therefore, we would request the I&B Ministry intervention in this matter and seek unconditional apology from Amazon Prime OTT service and the series producer.
