Save the Historic Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum!

The Issue

The iconic Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum is in danger of being lost.  Constructed in 1922, the Coliseum is on the National Register of Historic Places, and has been an integral part of Detroit's history, hosting not only fairground festivities but also numerous performances, ranging from Louis Armstrong, Marvin Gaye, and Al Green to MC5 and Nirvana during its lifetime.  In addition to musical performances, the Coliseum has hosted the Shrine Circus, the Wayne State University Warriors ice hockey team, three Extreme Championship Wrestling house shows and the Detroit Equestrian Club.

While we applaud the City of Detroit's efforts to reuse the adjacent Dairy Cattle Building, the Coliseum is slated to be destroyed to make way for a new transit center.  The Coliseum's unique stucco structure and rich history with Detroit's agricultural, athletic and musical scenes are all the more reason for its preservation and repurposing.

Detroit deserves better.  With Amazon making unimaginable profits, there are absolutely no financial limitations for the City of Detroit and developers to redesign a transit center that incorporates the preservation and repurposing of the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum as well.

We are petitioning Amazon, the City of Detroit and Hillwood Investment Properties to:

-Reimagine a new transit center that preserves, protects and repurposes the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum, Detroit's cultural landmark;

-Stop plans for the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum's imminent demolition;

-Get the support of the Detroit City Council, mayor and citizens to actively support the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum's preservation.

Thank you and please share this petition!  Together, we can preserve a part of Detroit's cultural history!
