Add additional larger font size(s) back into Kindle editions from Paperwhite onwards.
The Issue
I have always been an avid reader but life long partial vision made reading simultaneous pain and pleasure for me. Most books and news papers were printed in such small print, I could only read slowly holding the material uncomfortably close to my face. If content was complicated, the added difficulty of struggling to read normal print made it hard to maintain enthusiasm so I lost out on literature I might otherwise have enjoyed and learned from if it had been available in large enough print for me to read easily.
When the first Amazon Kindle came out however, it was life changing for me. It provided what other electronic reading devices didn't: a massive range of fonts (including huge font sizes, ones that were just the right size for me to use at a comfortable distance) and e-Ink which meant the reading experience was much like real ink on paper (rather than a glowing flickering screen). I re-engaged with reading in a huge way and read books on my first Kindle until the page-advance button wore out.
I then bought the next model up, the Paper White which in many ways was an improvement however soon after purchasing it, I discovered Amazon had chopped the top font size off. It's still an improvement on printed paperbacks but it also means the exact thing that was life changing in the earlier models is being phased out of later models. Just that one font size makes a massive difference.
I want the ease and comfort of reading I briefly had with the first Kindle back. I also want all the partially sighted kids in schools around the world now to have the socially and educationally equalising ability to read everything their peers can that I would have had if devices like the Kindle had been around when I was in school. There must be many other partially sighted people who could use a bit of extra magnification on what is otherwise a revolutionary invention.
It can't be a difficult thing for Amazon to change their software and add that large size (and maybe even a few larger for people with worse vision than me!) back in and that's why I've created this petition. Please sign and share!
