30 minutes of recess for PK-5 DISD students to promote healthy mental/physical development

30 minutes of recess for PK-5 DISD students to promote healthy mental/physical development

The Issue

Dallas Independent School District (DISD) is considering a measure to mandate recess for PK-5. Please sign this petition to show support for mandated recess that is at least 30 minutes in length. Multiple studies have proven that recess provides a necessary break for children. Besides the obvious physical benefits of combatting obesity in children, unstructured physical play also reduces stress and anxiety as well as improves children's attentiveness (National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development). Studies have even shown that such unstructured play fosters creativity, imagination and even higher reading and IQ scores (Hirsch-Pasek & Golinkioff). In short, recess provides important mental, emotional and physical benefits for children. Every child deserves to get outdoors and feel the sun and wind on their face while playing with their classmates and friends. Kids need to be kids for at least 30 minutes of the (7 hour) school day.
