Relocate the Lions and Tiger held indefinitely at the side of the M6

For a number of years Lions and Tigers have been held in cages between the A5 and M6 Toll in Cannock, an area I’m sure we can all agree is totally inadequate given their natural habitat.

The wild animals have been held here as part of a circus act by Thomas Chipperfield. The Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) have refused him a licence to perform in England, a decision that was upheld in January 2018 by a North Staffordshire magistrates court.

With the prospect of the license being granted looking ever less likely given the Government’s stance to not renew regulations that permit circus acts to use wild animals by 2020- I urge you to ensure arrangements are made to see that these ‘big cats’ are transfered somewhere more suitable.

Mr Chipperfield’s ‘previous conduct’ was cited as one reason for the refusal of a license to perform.

Animal welfare campaigners have made accusations of mistreatment at the site and it was reported in January that he and his co-owners received recommendations from Defra that they should improve conditions.

Today, nothing appears to have changed, the animals can be heard late into the evening when the traffic volumes subside calling out from the confines of their homes on the back of trailers.

I urge you to look beyond what’s ‘acceptable and permissible’ and do what is right.
