Cancel Finals and Pass DePaul Students During Corona Shut Down
The Issue
On March 11th 2020, DePaul University announced that all finals would be moved to online, all students living in on campus housing (including apartments) must move out by March 22nd, and that classes would be online spring quarter, which begins March 28th.
This decision was made for the safety and health of students and the greater public health but as a result thousands of DePaul students have 11 days to find housing and thousands of student workers have to find new jobs- notably Resident Advisors, Facility Assistants, and Student Center Facility Operation/Dining. TO make matters worse, during those 11 days, DePaul has final exams and projects.
It is impossible for DePaul students to both focus on academic studies and unemployment, homelessness, food insecurity, and loss of healthcare (because on campus students have insurance for the on campus doctor, Sage Medical).
Even with online classes, many students don't have WiFi or computers at home and need time to see if online classes is even a viable option or if they want to wait until fall quarter to continue their degree. International students need to figure out how they can afford to go home and IF they even can. Students who rely on campus meal plans need to find out if they can eat. Out-of-state students need to decide between their lease and their families.
We urge the President of DePaul University, Amado Gabriel Esteban, to grant no question, complete, ungraded credit to all DePaul students in all classes for which we are currently enrolled (including incomplete classes being resolved this quarter) and to give tuition refund to anyone who paid for in-person class tuition next term but does not want to do online ones and instead want to wait until fall quarter to re-enroll in classes. This is especially important for students who do not have access to Internet or have a disability or learning style that makes online classes impossible. We urge Dr. Esteban to continue to put students well-being first by understanding that DePaul students are in crisis right now and taking this action.
It is what must be done– to keep student safety as priority, to help students at the margins, and to maintain the DePaul dedication to community and the Vincentian mission.
Students are people, not machines. DePaul needs to set an example to the country that people and the safety of people is still FIRST. Give every enrolled student credit and put the focus on offering resources to help us help each other.
