The Issue

One of the greatest highlights through our high school journey is about self-expression—showcasing who we are and what we believe through creative outlets. As a senior in the Wentzville School District in Missouri, I have always dreamed of the opportunity to decorate something that represents my high school journey and my aspirations for the future. My heart was set on decorating my senior parking spot, an opportunity we didn’t get.

Graduation is not just the culmination of years of hard work, it is a celebration of individuality, growth, and achievements. A simple yet creative way to express this is through decorating our graduation caps. This tradition is cherished in many schools across the country and allows students to add a personal touch to their final moments in high school. For many, it's a chance to express gratitude, display their future goals, or simply express a joy of completing this chapter of life.

Unfortunately, students in the Wentzville School District are currently not allowed to personalize their graduation caps. This policy limits students' ability to mark this significant milestone with personal significance and creativity. Allowing students to decorate their caps won’t only add a festive mood to the ceremony, but it provides a sense of belonging and individuality, reinforcing the message that education is about nurturing unique talents and perspectives.

By permitting graduates to decorate their caps, we reinforce a positive and supportive community culture within the Wentzville School District that celebrates education, creativity, and individuality. This change will not require significant financial resources or disrupt the ceremony—many schools across the nation have successfully integrated this practice, finding it to enhance the graduation experience positively.

I urge the Wentzville School District Board and Superintendent to consider this change to their graduation policy. Let us join schools across the country in embracing this meaningful and creative tradition that allows our graduates to shine uniquely.

Please sign this petition to ask for the freedom and joy of cap decoration for all those in the Wentzville School District attending graduation.
